Three Things to Know When You Owe The IRS

The one thing that every taxpayer dreads; is owing the IRS and not being able to pay quickly. Aside from being stressed out, you’re constantly worrying about what the consequences of non-payment may be and how long you can skirt by without receiving another letter from them. Being in this position is no fun, but if you are there’s a few things you should know:

The IRS Isn’t Your Enemy

Despite what you may believe or have been told by family and friends — the IRS isn’t out to “take you down”. Many cases can come to an easy resolution with proper communication. As long as you’re taking steps to resolve your issues and not ignoring letters and other communication from them, you are not likely to see things like bank levies, wage garnishments and repossessions. Talking to an IRS agent can be stressful and intimidating but it’s the best way to reach a peaceful solution.

Waiting CAN Hurt You

Some people think it’s best to wait until they have the full amount of repayment before they contact the IRS. This is not true! One of the worst mistakes you can make is ignoring a notice and waiting until you have the full balance. While you’re waiting to resolve the initial balance, more debt could be accumulating and if the IRS is sending you notices that you repeatedly ignore — that will be seen as taxpayer inaction which could cause the IRS to become more aggressive in their communication or resolution.

There Are Professionals Who Can Help

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and resolve it as quickly as you can — great. But before you spend what could be hours on the phone trying to reach a representative, please know that there is someone who could help you with this. Enrolled Agents contact the IRS on your behalf and work to resolve your tax issues for you. This is beneficial because Enrolled Agents are experienced professionals and will likely be able to get you a better settlement or repayment option than you would’ve been able to.
